Pacific Rewind

As Christopher Kelley explains in this video, we don’t know much about planet Earth if we don’t know much about the deep sea. After several years of exploring the deep-sea environment in the Atlantic and Caribbean, NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer crossed the Panama Canal into the Pacific in late 2022. This new chapter began with a season of stunning remotely operated vehicle and mapping expeditions in west coast and Alaskan waters. As the ship moves into deepwater areas of Hawai’i and Johnston Atoll in 2024, this year’s operations will focus on mapping as a foundation for future exploration as we mark the beginning of the Beyond the Blue: Illuminating the Pacific campaign.
