When I go to Antarctica for geologic or oceanographic fieldwork I usually travel by research ship. Here I am standing on a ship in the nice warm parka that the U.S. Antarctic Program lends out to researchers so they do not have to buy their own expensive cold-weather gear. Unfortunately, I had to give the parka back at the end of the expedition. The black volcanic cone in the background is Penguin Island in the South Shetland Islands.
