This animation shows the three-dimensional structure of a "subduction zone", where two of the Earth's tectonic plates collide and one is forced beneath the other. As the down-going plate heats up it releases volitiles that causes the overlying mantle to melt. This molten rock rises up to the surface and feeds active volcanoes. Animation courtesy of Clay Hamilton and Bill Chadwick.
