We encountered this Marlin-spike grenadier (Nezumia bairdii) swimming over dead coral rubble at a depth of 814 meters (2,671 feet) during the first dive of the Voyage to the Ridge 2022 second expedition. These deepwater fish have been documented in Atlantic waters from Newfoundland to the northern end of the Straits of Florida. They scull along slowly, nose down (like the one pictured here), searching for small mobile prey.
