With their strongly projecting lower jaws, wreckfish (Polyprion americanus) are large, slow-growing, deep-dwelling fish. Also known as sea bass or stone bass, wreckfish are a commercially important species of fish found in the western Atlantic Ocean from Grand Banks, Newfoundland, to La Plata River, Argentina. These large predators typically weigh between 18 to 27 kilograms (40 to 60 pounds) and are 0.75 to 1.2 meters (2.5 to 4 feet) long, but they can get as large as 100 kilograms (220 pounds) and 2 meters (6.5 feet). The one pictured here, seen during Dive 01 of the second Voyage to the Ridge 2022 expedition at a depth of 583 meters (1,913 feet), measured nearly 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length!
