There goes remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Deep Discoverer (also known as “D2”), down for a dive! During Voyage to the Ridge 2022, NOAA Ocean Exploration is using a two-bodied ROV system that includes D2 and Seirios. They can dive as deep as 6,000 meters (3.7 miles), but unlike Captain Barnacles’ trusty Gup-A, no one travels inside of D2 and Seirios. Instead, they are attached to the ship via a very long cable and pilots from the Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration (GFOE) remotely operate the ROVs from the control room on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer. Much like Tweak, the engineers from GFOE also keep D2 and Seirios running and in top shape!
