Classroom Lessons

Classroom lessons and learning tools relevant to the expedition are listed below by grade level. Although some of these resources may have been developed for past expeditions conducted in other regions of the world ocean, the Focus Questions and Student Learning Objectives are applicable to the current expedition.

Exploring LIVE Lesson (PDF, 204 KB)

Grade Level: 5-12 (Physical Science/Earth Science)
Focus: How can students become active ocean explorers while viewing live video feeds during Okeanos Explorer expeditions?

Students learn how to access the Ocean Explorer website and access a live video feed of an Okeanos Explorer expedition. (Video clips are provided for classwork when expeditions are not live).

Grades 6-9

Viscous Volcanoes (PDF, 783 KB)

Grade Level: 6-8 (Earth Science
Focus: What are serpentine mud volcanoes and how are they different from magma volcanoes?

Students will describe mud volcanoes, contrast them with magma volcanoes, and explain how these structures, the Mariana Islands, and the Mariana Trench are related to the motion of tectonic plates.

Grades 9-12

Sea Serpentines Lesson (PDF, 567 KB)

Grade Level: 9-12 (Earth Science)
Focus: Serpentine mud volcanoes

Students will describe serpentinization and explain its significance to deep-sea ecosystems.
