On August 10, 2016, we conducted a remotely operated vehicle dive off of Wake Island, searching for the site of the shipwreck of the Japanese destroyer Hayate. Almost immediately, a shipwreck was found and we began surveying the site. We eventually determined that the wreck was not the Hayate, but the Amakusa Maru, a Japanese water tanker that was sunk by the USS Triton on December 24, 1942.
