This feathered friend took up temporary residence on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer during the 2021 ROV Shakedown expedition off the U.S. mid-Atlantic coast. The tag on its leg indicated it had come all the way from Portugal and was likely one of thousands of racing pigeons that got confused by unusual weather conditions during a race and lost their way. Many of these athletes returned home or were rescued in neighboring Spain. Our visitor departed the ship in Rhode Island at the end of the expedition.
