Before the videographer zoomed in on this “otherworldly” squid, it was thought to be a siphonophore or jellyfish. This first sighting of a bigfin squid by NOAA Ocean Exploration on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer (and now one of two) was in Keathley Canyon at a depth of 1,961 meters (6,434 feet) in the Northern Gulf of Mexico during Dive 13 of the Gulf of Mexico 2012 Expedition (leg 3).
