Glacier Bay National Park Highlight Video: March 2016

This video features highlights from the Deepwater Exploration of Glacier Bay National Park expedition. Conducted in 2016, this expedition marked the first time that the deepwater areas of this park had been explored.

Established in 1925, Glacier Bay National Park includes a federally protected marine area of nearly 600,000 acres. Park staff are tasked with preserving the park’s marine ecosystems “unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations,” yet they have limited capacity to understand what is happening from the park’s waterline down to its seafloor. This expedition changed that by providing the park’s first deepwater data. Not only do these data provide a baseline to monitor ecosystem changes over time, but they also provide a point of comparison for less-protected marine areas.
