Halibut Canyon: September 2, 2019

During the Deep Connections 2019: Exploring Atlantic Canyons and Seamounts of the United States and Canada expedition, scientists spotted three Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) while exploring an unnamed deep-sea minor canyon north of Kinlan Canyon, located off the New England coast. While major shelf-incised canyons in this region have received a fair amount of attention in terms of exploration, minor slope canyons like the one explored during this dive remain mostly unexplored. Three observations of Atlantic halibut in a relatively short period of time suggests that this canyon may serve as critical habitat for this endangered species.
