Comb Jelly: June 25, 2021

While the focus of the 2021 ROV Shakedown was testing equipment on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and making sure it was ready for upcoming expeditions, there was time on the expedition for science and to capture imagery of some of the wonderful organisms that live in deep waters off the U.S. East Coast. This beautifully colored comb jelly, or ctenophore, was seen while diving in Uchupi Canyon during the expedition. Ctenophores have eight rows of cilia in structures called “ctenes” that the animals use to propel themselves through the water.
