Arctic sea ice cover

The ice cover of the Arctic Seas consists of individual ice floes separated by areas of open waters (leads or polynyas). Floe sizes range from several m to km. In summer, light blue, freshwater melt puddles may cover up to 60% of the surface of the ice. Image courtesy of Arctic Exploration 2002, Rolf Gradinger, NOAA/OER.
