Dr. Frank holds a hagfish caught in one of the benthic traps. These fish appear to be prevalent at the brine pool.

To make fluorescent observations, the Johnson-Sea-Link is modified by placing blue filters on the submersible’s two, 400W HMI lamps. To search effectively, we need high-intensity illumination. The sub crew mounted these lights forward on the lower work platform so the beam would not have as far to travel to the bottom. If you use blue light to excite the fluorescence, you need yellow filters to observe or photograph it.
