The Derek M. Baylis, a San Francisco-based sailboat owned by Sea Life Conservation helped make the San Andreas project a “green” oceanographic research project. Powered by a combination of wind and diesel, the Baylis runs quietly and emits little pollution. During the entire expedition, the Baylis’ average fuel consumption was 1.6 gallons per hour.
