Dandelion Siphonophore: February 17, 2017

This potentially new species of dandelion siphonophore, from the family Rhodalidae, was imaged using its tentacles to attach to iron-manganese encrusted rocks on the deep slopes of Rose Atoll. Seen during the 2017 American Samoa: Suesuega o le Moana o Amerika Samoa expedition.

Dandelion siphonophores are actually composed of many individuals that all work together, with some protecting the colony, some catching food, some reproducing, etc.
