Black Eel-Like Fish: November 10, 2021

 

This video is not slowed down! Identified as Bythites gerdae, this large black eel-like fish was seen swimming very slowly during Dive 11 of Windows to the Deep 2021. These fish are very rare, having only been imaged in situ once or twice. Observed at a depth of 1,154 meters (3,786 feet), this sighting represents a depth record, breaking the previous observation record by at least 200 meters (656 feet).
